Robin - Reception

Hi, I'm Miss Albani and I teach in Robin Class.

I love teaching in the Early Years Foundation Stage and supporting children throughout their first year in education.

My favourite subject is definitely Maths and I absolutely love taking all types of learning outdoors.

I am also an avid reader. I do value greatly our story times in class and I like supporting children in immersing themselves into a new book. I enjoy some role play, making props, or simply creating a cosy and inviting reading nook where children can enjoy listening to a story.

Additional adults working in Robins class: Mr Graves and Miss Styles

Term Two

We welcome you to another fun and exciting term ahead!

Topic

Our topic this term is ‘Wonderful World/celebration - Seasonal changes'. We will be looking at seasonal changes from Autumn to Winter. Children will be learning about celebrations happening during this time, such as Bonfire night, Diwali and Christmas.

Literacy

Linking to our 'Wonderful World - Seasonal changes' topic, our focus books this term are: Little Glow, The Best Diwali Ever, The Leaf Thief, Fletcher and the Falling Leaves, The Nativity, The Jolly Postman, Stickman.

In Literacy, we will be:

  • Retelling and sequencing stories, using vocabulary of beginning, middle and end

  • Predicting what could happen next, joining in with repeated phrases and using intonation when repeating phrases

  • Learning that the blurb is a summary of the book

  • Developing fluency with blending letters together to make words

  • Hearing and saying initial sounds in words

  • Learning some common irregular words (Red words)

  • Forming letters correctly

  • Segmenting sounds in CVC words e.g. cat = c-a-t and writing sounds in the correct sequence to spell words

  • Learning to write labels and captions

Phonics

The children will be learning their letter sounds supported by 'Fred the frog' (who only speaks in sounds) and they will start developing their blending skills by putting the sounds together.

We are learning to read and write sounds in this order:

Maths

We will learn to:

  • Find, represent, compose and subitise numbers up to 5

  • Identify, name and combine simple 2D shapes

  • Identify shapes in the environment

  • Describe position

  • Sequence events, including learning about day and night

Learning at home for Robin Class:

Reading

We will be sending home 2 books for you to share with your child:

1. Picture books - please share these together and talk about the pictures, what is happening in the story and what might happen next

2. Ditty sheets - children will be using those to practice reading the sounds they are familiar with, reading skills (E.g. segmenting/blending) and other familiar words (red words).

Please try to spend some time each day listening to your child read/ tell the story from pictures as it really does have a positive impact on their progress.  Remember to sign your child’s reading record when they have read to you.

Be ready for learning! In Robin Class your child will need to have these items in school:

Everything you send to school MUST be labelled clearly with your child’s name. Lost property will be available for parents to access daily on the school premises should anything go missing.

  • Book bag (provided by school)

  • Water bottle (no squash or juice)

  • Lunchbox (if not having school meal)

  • Wellington boots (to leave in school)

  • Coat (weather appropriate)

  • Bag of spare clothes to leave on your child's peg

  • PE Kit (to be worn all day on a PE day)

Please don’t bring other items or toys into school, as we do not have space to store these, and it can cause upset if things are lost or damaged.

Outdoor learning:

Outdoor learning plays a pivotal part in our children's development. Therefore, much of our learning in EYFS, takes place outside, and we aim to enjoy our outdoor learning area in any weather! So please, provide a pair of Wellington boots which you are happy to leave in school for outdoor play.

Forest school:

As the colder weather approaches, children should be sent to school wearing appropriate clothing to keep them warm when working outdoors. We recommend children come into school wearing scarves, gloves, woolly hats and waterproof jackets to be ready (and warm...) to join in the forest school sessions.
